Battling Psoriasis: Why I choose White Girl Sunscreen

Hey babes! My name is Kait Curnow and I've taken over the White Girl Sunscreen blog to share my experience using White Girl Sunscreen!

Over the last few years I've become more and more self-aware of my skin and the potential long-term damage I could get from regular things I was doing like laying in the sun, tanning in the beds, or even an improper skincare regimen. This really sunk in with me when I found out I had psoriasis my sophomore year of college, which left me with patchy red spots all over my legs. Having psoriasis meant my body needed more vitamin D - aka the sunshine - and also that I would have to battle this skin issue for the remainder of my life, since it's an autoimmune disorder that is treatable but not curable.

Looking back to middle and high school I now see how lucky I was that my Mom never let me touch a tanning bed. It wasn't until college that I occasionally went tanning, 1 to 2 times a week.

When I was diagnosed with Psoriasis, it was recommended to me by my dermatologist to continue my visits to the tanning bed because my spots at the time were SO bad. Psoriasis is something that can become increasingly worse in the winter, since it's cold and your body is getting less of that vitamin D it needs.

As summer rolled around I would switch from the bed to just laying outside - and did that every second I got. Not only did I want my spots to clear up, but once they do they turn white, so now instead of red spots, I had white spots. (Talk about a hit to a girls self-confidence.)

Luckily, fast forward to 2016 and I've managed to really get my skin under control! (Woo Hoo for me!!!!) I think a lot of factors have played into it, and it's not even to say that come this winter it couldn't get really bad again. But, having made so much progress and feeling like my skin was back to normal, I knew I wanted to cut down on sun exposure as much as possible. This is where my love for White Girl Sunscreen comes into play!

I officially decided to cancel my tanning membership and had started using self-tanners to keep up somewhat of a glow. By the time summer was in full action, I would try to lay out but was getting burned and even getting a heat rash from time to time.

I just felt like I was doing more harm than good to my skin. When I tried using suntan lotions or oils I was getting a rash/breakouts and my skin was left overly dry (the key to psoriasis is moisture, btw!).

When I was introduced to White Girl Sunscreen I felt like there was actually some hope for me to be out comfortably in the sun and not let my skin worries get the best of me! The fact that it was created by two girls who, like myself, love being outside but don't want the worries of skin damage, resonated well with me.

The babes behind the product, Rachel + Solongo, wanted to "spread consciousness and awareness around the importance of protecting your skin from the sun's harmful rays." Although based on the East Coast their product and brand has a little "West Coast flair" to it and aims to "inspire everyone to look, live and feel their best" - how awesome is that?!

White Girl Sunscreen has it's own unique formula that's safe and won't dry out your skin, or take away that spray tan you just got because IT'S ALCOHOL FREE!!! In addition to alcohol free, the sunscreen is also Gluten free and Paraben free. The scent is super light and the product itself feels like a regular lotion, with no sticky residue and easy to rub in. It comes in a cute 10ml pouch with a screw on cap, making it light and portable.

From my experience using it, I've had no issues with breakouts, rashes or other reactions like I've had previously using other suntan lotions. I've also never experienced a burn while wearing it throughout the day in sun exposure. It's made with SPF 30, and I know for me personally, that's perfect for my skin.

Aside from it being an awesome sunscreen, I've used it as a regular moisturizer under my makeup as well! Again, it's super light and rubs into your skin easily so there's no white residue left behind and since there's no alcohol in it, your skin won't be left feeling dry or dehydrated.

Last but not least, another reason I love this product and company so much is their giving back to a great cause! White Girl Sunscreen supports Save The Manatee Foundation by donating a portion of the proceeds from every pouch of sunscreen purchased.

ALSO, White Girl Sunscreen made their product without Oxybenzone - a component found in most sunscreens that is responsible for coral reef damage. So, when you use White Girl Sunscreen you're not only protecting your skin, but theirs too!!
